White Water With many of the waters around Wales expected to start filling up soon I will be covering various events around the principality and getting together with the major people in canoeing to bring you the latest news and views on the white water scene. Still WatersThere are many opportunities to get afloat on the still waters in Wales with a good variety of inland Canals and Lakes the sites are often managed and there are often charges for use of the parking and launching facilities. Membership of the Welsh Canoeing Association however allows use of the British waterways canal system without charge for launching River Grading SystemGrade 1. Rivers with long, flat stretches of slow moving water with low waves and occasional simple rapids Used for inland touring and novice instruction Grade 2. Rivers have fairly frequent rapids with moderate waves or eddies Used for touring by proficient canoeists or practice of moving water skills Grade 3. Rapids are frequent with irregular waves of medium height, water has many boils and the course to steer is not always obvious Used by more proficient white water canoeists wishing to practice their skills and techniques on more difficult stretches of water Grades 4, 5 & 6 are all extension on the above however grade 6 has a risk to life tag attached to it.
